Freeze Thaw Tells Local Bikers How to Get Their Morning Jolt Without Caffeine
To help kick off Bike to Work Week, which runs tomorrow through May 8th, we asked Jordyn Drayton, co-owner of Freeze Thaw Cycles, a sponsor of the event, how to turn yourself into a greener commuter.
What’s the unexpected upside to biking to work?

- Freeze Thaw Cycles is one of the sponsors of Bike to Work Week.
People feel that it has the same effect as your cup of coffee in the morning. It wakes you up, so you’re ready to go and alert.
What about the sweat factor?
You need to have a change of clothing and ideally a place to shower. In a lot of bigger cities where bike commuting is more prevalent companies are actually starting to have showers installed. That’s trickling down now–a lot of employers have shower facilities and will open them up to their bike commuters. You’re starting to find that at different places on campus and also with local businesses.
What’s the minimum equipment needed?
A helmet and some sort of a bag. Most people can just use a backpack. And you definitely need lights to commute safely: a simple LED light for the front and a flashing LED light for the rear. It’s actually required by law. There are several signs posted by the State College police around town. At this time they’re just trying to give warnings and educate people about it.
Any resources for safe bike commuting routes?
CATA and Centre Region Bike Coalition (CRBC) have a combined bike/bus route map. Because CATA buses have bike racks, you can connect bike riding and mass transportation to cover even greater distances. This free map is available at our shop as well as a lot of bus stations. And as part of this week’s activities, there will be guided commuter rides from different areas—volunteers who will lead people on safe routes. (For a guide in your area, go to the Bike to Work Week site and check out the box labeled “Ride Guide for New Commuters.”)
